Australia has a variety of visa options available to skilled individuals who have been offered a position by an Australian employer. These visas are designed to facilitate a reduction in staff shortages in Australian businesses affected by industry-wide skill shortages.

There are temporary and permanent visa options available, with differing criteria and conditions.

Employer Sponsored Visas

Employer Nomination Scheme Subclass 186 (ENS)

Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visas, or subclass 186 visas, are permanent residency visas for skilled workers. They are available both to applicants who are already living and working in Australia as temporary residents, and to those living outside Australia. To be eligible for this visa, a skilled individual must be nominated by an Australian employer.

What Does This Visa Allow You To Do?

This visa provides the holder with Australian permanent residency with no conditions. Dependent family members may be included. The holder can live and work wherever they like in Australia. Although the visa is granted based on the holder being skilled in a specific occupation, once granted, the visa doesn’t require you to seek or maintain employment in this occupation.

Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (TSS Visa) Subclass 482

What Does This Visa Allow You To Do?

The TSS visa is a temporary visa which permits the holder to live in Australia, while working full-time for the sponsoring employer, in the nominated position. Applicants for a TSS visa may include dependent family members in their application.

Who Can Apply For The TSS Visa?

The TSS visa has a short-term stream and a medium-term stream.  Applicants with occupations on the Short-Term Skilled Occupations List (STSOL) are eligible for visas of up to two years (renewable once, for a further two years), whilst those on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) can apply for up to four years, with eligibility for permanent residency after three years.

Skilled Visas Without An Employer

Australia has a range of visa options for skilled people interested in living and working in Australia known as General Skilled Migration (GSM) Visas.

These visa subclasses are particularly attractive to skilled applicants who do not currently have an Australian employer who wishes to sponsor them for a visa.

There are temporary and permanent options available, with varying eligibility criteria.

Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189

The 189 Visa is a permanent visa that allows skilled workers to live in Australia.

What Does This Visa Allow You To Do?

This visa provides the holder with Australian permanent residency with no conditions. The holder can live and work wherever they like in Australia. Although the visa is granted based on the holder being skilled in a specific occupation, once granted, the visa doesn’t require you to seek or maintain employment in this occupation.

Skilled Nominated Visa Subclass 190

The 190 Visa is a permanent visa that allows skilled workers to live in Australia, based on a nomination by an Australian state or territory.

What Does This Visa Allow You To Do?

This visa provides the holder with Australian permanent residency with no conditions. The holder can live and work indefinitely in their chosen state. Although the visa is granted based on the holder being skilled in a specific occupation, once granted, the visa doesn’t require you to seek or maintain employment in this occupation.

Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485

The 485 Visa is a temporary visa for international students who have recently graduated from an Australian educational institution.

What Does This Visa Allow You To Do?

Applicants must be under 50 years of age, hold a student visa (or a Bridging Visa A or B following a student visa), have been awarded a qualification from a CRICOS registered course within the last 6 months, and meet additional requirements specific to their chosen stream. Family members may be included in an application for a subclass 485 visa if they are also in Australia.
